The subway station air was stale and stifling, and breathing it in hardly felt like breathing at all. When she finally stepped out into the open night, she inhaled deeply and let the crisp cold soothe her nerves and building headache. The sounds of countless voices died down to those of just her two companions (and really, it was just the one), who followed behind her as she set out down the sparsely populated roads. Their route was so familiar to her that her gaze drifted to the nearly starless sky above them, broken into strips by the surrounding buildings.

In a different country, they would pass by their destination's door and duck sideways into an alley to climb the fire escape. But Japan had few, if any, fire escapes, so instead she swept up her hood and lowered her head as she pushed through the front entrance.

"Hey!" barked Ken, who flushed at his own outburst as Chrome turned to peer at him through her one puzzled eye. There weren't any other people around to hear, but he and Chigusa nevertheless flipped up their own hoods as they shuffled past her into the foyer. Ken stopped once inside, and jabbed a finger in her direction as he stage-whispered, "Leave that kind of thing to me to do!"

Chrome stared, trying to think of what he meant, until her eye felt dry and urged her to blink.

"Opening doors," Ken grumbled, shoving his hands into his pockets and straightening out his arms, so his shoulders pushed up next to his ears. "Muscle stuff!"

Chrome looked at him a moment longer, until she realized she was still holding the door open and stepped away to let it fall shut.

"Aghh, never mind!" Ken hissed, and stomped over to the stairwell. Chrome glanced at Chigusa, who showed no particular reaction but to follow after Ken, and decided to simply follow after them as well.

They intended to take the stairs up to the roof, much to Chigusa's mildly visible irritation, but just as they were approaching the door to the fifth floor, it burst open, revealing a woman hardly older than Chrome.
